L.P.--No. 8.

101

Admiralty, S.W. 1,

10th February, 192 7.

With reference to your letter No.30045/27 of

the 1st instant, forwarding a copy of telegraphic corres-

pondence with the Governor of the Straits Settlements

regarding the possible reaction which hostilities in

China would produce in Malaya, and suggesting that one

of H.M.Ships should be detached to Singapore for the

purpose of exercising a restraining influence, I am

commanded by My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty

to request that you will inform Mr. Secretary Amery

that until the arrival of the Shanghai Defence Force in

Eastern Waters, it will not be possible to detach a

ship to Singapore except in case of real emergency,

H.M.S. "DAUNTLESS" is, however, due to leave Malta on 8th February, and will call at Singapore on her way to

the China Station. If necessary, and the situation in

China permits, she could be ordered to remain at

Singapore for a time.

A copy of this letter has been sent to the

2.-

War Office,

Under Secretary of State,

COLONIAL OFFICE.

I am, Sir,

Your obedient Servant

Alia
